Project Title: Mutagenesis of Genes involved in the Quorum Sensing Pathway of R. solanacearum
Abstract of Project :
Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is a major threat to the cultivation of commercially important solanaceous vegetables and ornamental plants throughout the world. Quorum sensing is the main factor governing the expression of virulence factors by this bacterium. The proposed research involves the mutagenesis of phcB and phcQ genes involved in the signaling cascade of R. solanacearum to gain a better understanding of their role in virulence and xylem colonization. Tagging the mutants with Green Fluorescent Protein will help study their localization and pattern of colonization in the plant tissues. My Fulbright-Nehru project aims to reveal the genes or the gene products which could be targeted for disrupting the signaling pathway and thus aid in designing quorum quenching strategies for management of Bacterial wilt.
